WAKE FOREST, N.C. — Mark W. Galland, M.D. with Orthopaedic Specialists of North Carolina, P.A. (OSNC) is donating $500 to a new scholarship established in honor of Chuck Hess, a long-serving coach and athletic director at Wake Forest-Rolesville (WF-R) High School who retired earlier this month. The scholarship will be awarded next May to a WF-R High School senior who is pursuing a college degree in sports medicine.

"Chuck Hess was an outstanding coach and an exceptional man, and I’m honored to have the opportunity to preserve his legacy while also helping a student achieve a degree in sports medicine,” said Dr. Mark Galland, Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine and managing partner for OSNC.

A Michigan native, Chuck Hess moved to Wake County in 1978 where he taught at WF-R Middle School for five years before accepting a position at the high school. After one year of teaching, Hess began his 13-season tenure as head coach of the high school boy’s soccer team in 1984. Lacking any prior soccer experience, Hess helped the team capture nine consecutive conference titles and even won a state championship in 1996. Hess was named the men's basketball coach in 1993 and built a 232-160 record before ending his 15th year in that role.

Dr. Galland is deeply committed to supporting local charities and schools in his community. In addition to his contribution to the WF-R High School scholarship, Dr. Galland recently made large donations to the Franklin County Volunteers in Medicine Clinic, which provides medical care to the uninsured residents of Franklin county and to the Franklinton High School girl’s soccer team’s “Kick it to Cancer” fundraiser.

Dr. Galland began his career in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine while serving as Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune, where he received countless awards for treating the musculoskeletal and sports injuries common in sailors and marines. During his residency at Tulane University, Dr. Galland served as the Assistant Team Physician to both the undefeated football team and the university men’s basketball team. He also served as Team Physician to several local high schools and colleges including Dillard and Xavier Universities.

Since joining OSNC, Dr. Galland has continued his commitment and dedication to the treatment of injured athletes. He currently serves as Team Physician and Orthopaedic Consultant to the Carolina Mudcats, AA Affiliate of the Florida Marlins of Major League Baseball, Medical Director and Orthopaedic Consultant to the Louisburg College Athletic Program, and Team Physician and Orthopaedic Consultant to several local high schools.
